I consider our family lucky to live on a Rail Trail. The abandoned railway known as the Hop River State Park is a gem. We live in Bolton, Connecticut, a town that really supports the rail trail and other trail systems. Greenways are a big initiative in Connecticut. Not all greenways are on abandoned rail lines. A linear park can be designed and built from scratch. We have both types in Connecticut. Some trail surfaces are pave, others are cinder track, and others are packed dirt.
There is a big push to convert more rail lines into mixed use trails for walking, running, roller blading, cycling, skiing, and other healthy pursuits. It isn’t really luck why we live on a rail trail. It is really by design, but we are still fortunate to have the trail go through our town. Trails criss-cross all of Connecticut and if we get our way, there will be more. I read a nice letter to the editor about expanding support for greenways, specifically the East Coast Greenway, in Connecticut. We have some great advocates in our area. Any expansion will benefit bicycle commuters, exercise enthusiasts, and just about anyone who cares about nature. Driving less, and exercising more, has to be a good thing.
