Finger Lakes Fifties

The Finger Lakes Fifties trail runs have been held in Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector, NY for 19 years. The 50km and 50m trail runs are true ultra-marathons and the 25km race is a good way for future ultra runners to get their feet wet and muddy (usually).

This year’s race course was dryer and faster than ever. It had received a lot of pre-race trail work/grooming and the conditions produced hard and smooth trails. Mud wasn’t a factor. If anything, the dusty dirt roads were an annoyance. The relatively flat 15.5m loops make for an interesting race because you don’t have to decide if you are doing the 50km or 50m until you complete your second loop. Deb was focused on the 50m as part of her build up towards her bigger objectives, but stopped at 50km. This course was quite different from the rugged and hilly Pittsfield Peaks Ultra Challenge, and wasn’t suited for her. It was just too fast.

Leigh Schmitt, Fifty Mile Winner and Course Record Holder

Many of the course records fell, including the Men’s (Leigh Schmitt) and Women’s (Rebecca Harman) 50m records, and the Men’s (Yassine Diboun) 50km record. The weather was fabulous with cool temperatures and brilliant sunshine. Everyone had a great day. Deb was 2nd woman in the 50km behind Nancy Kleinrock, a fine local runner who only lives 3 miles from the National Forest.

Rebecca Harman was 1st woman and 3rd overall in the 50m.

Awesome morning at #elmcitycx the #ctseriesofcx finale. The kids did great. So did the Masters. Great season. Many of us are done after today. A few of us are headed to Nats. At the moment, all of us are frozen! #newhaven #cyclocross #teamhorstsports #teamhorstjuniorsquad #crossspikes @horsteng #lifedeathcyclocross ❄️🚴🏽⛄️🍺 @bentwaterbrewing #bentwaterbrewing #pulpfiction #lynnlynnthecityofsin Overnight with @boyscoutsofamerica Troop 25 at the 4-H Camp in Pomfret. The toboggan run was hairy! I just watched. #boyscouts That moment when @trailrunningmom discovered that our longtime #Christmas Tree 🌲 supplier is a regular student in her #yoga class. They previously hadn’t recognized each other when not wearing #yogini gear. It was great to hear how our farmer has improved her strength and flexibility since she took over the business from her late husband. Note: preparing our menorah for #hannukah takes less work than this! Lovely December day for #Cyclocross at Goddard Park. @nbx_bikes #nbxcx @vittoriaseries #teamhorstsports #teamhorstjuniorsquad @horsteng #crossspikes #rhodeisland Lovely day for more than 130 #BoltonLandTrust members and friends at the annual Walk of #Thanksgiving #bolton #connecticut 🌲 #blackfriday didn’t start so badly! Great day at the #manchesterroadrace @shenipsitstriders #shenipsitstriders #silkcitystriders #teamhorstsports #thanksgiving 🏃🏻 If I always had the option to commute by train 🚂, I would take it. #multitasking 1h45m each way if uninterrupted productivity and NO driving. I even squeezed in a lap of #centralpark with Tim. 🏃🏻#manhattan #newyork
