Horst Engineering de México

After my missed flight and night spent in Atlanta, I was anxious to finally get to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. My final destination on this trip was Horst Engineering de México, our maquiladora. I spent an enjoyable couple of days meeting with our contacts in Nogales and touring the plant. It is nice to see the progress that we are making with the expansion. In México, there is just as much concern about the economy, business conditions, and the election, as there is in the United States. The saying goes, “When the US sneezes, México get’s a cold.” Both economies are very much tied together, especially in the border zone. Fortunately, manufacturing has been a bright spot and that is good for the Sonoran economy.

One thing I didn’t expect to find in México and Arizona….was snow! However, on Friday, we had a wicked little storm that brought wind, steady rain, then steady snow. Snow in Tucson and especially Nogales, is a rarity. To my amazement, the snow was sticking and accumulating on some surfaces. The roads in Nogales are a disaster when it is dry and 105°F. The snow made them worse. I had a customer appointment at an industrial park on the south side of the city. My drive was intense. Being from New England, I totally trust my driving in the snow. However, it was white knuckles the whole time as I dodged the other motorists, who are crazy, even when they don’t have the white stuff to contend with.

The little pickup was whiter because of the snow!

I avoided any further travel disasters and made my way back to our plant near the border. After saying my goodbyes, I made the trip back to Tucson. I was in a rush again, and avoided stopping, though I wish I could have. The view through the clouds of the snow covered Santa Rita Mountains was spectacular. I am looking forward to a return visit…when the weather in Arizona/México is actually warmer and drier than in Connecticut!
