Air Line Trail a Gem, but Lack of Funding Hurts Connecticut Parks

The Air Line Trail is one of the many great Rail Trails in Connecticut. On Sunday morning, Deb, Shep, and I did a little bike ride out and back from the parking lot on Route 85. We were on our way to visit family in Old Lyme, so it was the perfect exercise pit-stop. There were a lot of folks making use of the multi-use trail. We saw dog walkers, other cyclists, runners, and walkers. It was a great morning to be on a trail.

Deb cruises over an Air Line Trail bridge.

Like the Hop River Trail, which we live on, the Air Line Trail is a state park. Saturday’s edition of the Journal Inquirer, had a story about Connecticut State Parks. There is a major lack of funding for the Departiment of Environmental Protection. Debbie knows this from her dealings with DEP as race director of the Soapstone Mountain Trail Races. Getting permits and stuff for the run in Shenipsit State Forest is burden. A lack of oversight at Shenipsit resulted in some problems at the race last weekend. So, it was fitting to see photos of the Soapstone Mountain fire tower in the JI on Saturday. They weren’t pretty. Vandals have wreaked havoc on the old wood structure. Fortunate for us, we were dwelling on this as we cruised the beautiful Air Line Trail.

A beautiful view from the Air Line Trail.

I thought I was the competitive one, but she can turn anything into a competition! The kids had a blast too at family day.
