Nayantaquit Trail: Lyme, Connecticut

Thanks to the Memorial Day holiday, it was a long weekend. That gave us a chance to explore another Connecticut State Park. This time, it was Nehantic State Forest in Lyme, Connecticut. We were up early, so we made our way up Route 156 to the dirt road that leads to the trail-head for the Nayantaquit Trail.

Nayantaquit Trail wetland.

This trail is named for the American Indian tribe that lived in the Lyme area. It was a short 3.4 mile loop, but more than enough for a lazy Monday. We actually walked a bit longer because we had to retrace our steps to locate Shep’s pack companion. He got dropped on the trail. Fortunately, we found him unharmed.

Shep\'s companion.

The trail had its ups and downs and was one of the rockier Blue Blazed Trails that we have been on. We saw a lot of great stone walls. You could also see evidence of forestry in action and also see where trees had been harvested years ago. Debbie had gotten in some great training this weekend and carrying Shep for another 3+ miles on the trail added to the effort. She will be back on a Blue Blazed Trail next weekend at the 25th annual Nipmuck Trail Marathon.

Good training for Nipmuck.
