Risking Life and Limb: Riding a Bike to Work

I was so pleased to see a Page 1 article in today’s Wall Street Journal about bicycle commuting and it’s associated dangers. There has been a lot of bike related stuff in the news lately, and I’m not talking about that bogus WWF style race in France. Do they actually want us to believe that those wrestlers, er cyclists, are clean?

The energy crisis is forcing more people to pull their bikes out of the garage and actually pedal them. The increase in cyclists has resulted in an increase in accidents. I rode my bike to work again today and had my own run in…sort of. A motorist squeezed me against the curb three separate times as she passed me! I kept going by her as she slowed for traffic and lights. She had her nicotine delivery system device in her left hand, her PDA/phone in her right, and was attempting to steer her 5000 pounds of steel/aluminum/plastic/rubber at the same time. I used a few choice words after she blared her horn at me after the third time, and for no reason. I’m more laid back than I used to be. In the old days, I may have gone in hot pursuit of the motorist. I’ve learned through experience that the militant approach doesn’t work. I enjoy reading about Critical Mass, but haven’t participated myself.

A story that I read earlier this week was about a Cricital Mass ride in New York City where a police officer injured a cyclist, by tackling him off of his bike for no apparent reason. Once again, the power of You Tube delivers the video evidence.
