Hudson Valley Velodrome & Catskill Mountain Multisport

Hard core New Englanders don’t necessarily get to New York State very often. I was drawn to the Shawangunk  Mountains this past weekend for the American Zofingen Ultra-Distance Duathlon. Registration for the race was at Catskill Mountain Multisport in Hurley, New York.

We found our way to the “bike shop” which was up a steep mountain road nestled at the back of a modular/mobile home park. It was an odd place for a storefront. I figured that they must have a unique and dedicated clientele. Fortunately, most hard core triathletes/duathletes fit the bill.

The shop was filled with high end time trial bikes, wet suits, running shoes, and cross country ski gear. Multisport indeed! I also spotted a small South Bend Lathe and a Bridgeport Knee Mill. After that, I felt totally at home. I combo bike shop/machine shop. What a dream! Apparently, the machine tools are part of the Holter Fine Bicycles  custom frame building/repair operation. There was a real mish-mosh of business activity on this hillside.

Another project that caught my eye was the development of an indoor velodrome. It would be the first one indoors in the Northeast. When we were driving up to the shop, I noticed signs indicating that there was a velodrome. Alas, no velodrome yet. The project is still on the drawing board, but the marketing sure was effective! I was told that races and other fundraisers are held to support the project. I shot some photos of the future velodrome site. Hopefully, I can come back in a few years and ride in circles in a nice warm building while it is snowing outside.

‪Over the last 10 weeks, I filled my Subaru’s gas tank four times. In the prior 10 weeks, I filled it 13 times. I’ve gone to work every day @horsteng but my other travel stopped. Both the pandemic and my cycling have been major factors. #carfreecommute #cycling #sevencycles ‬#teamhorstsports #horstengineering #bicycle
