Back in Vermont

We crossed back into the United States at Derby Line Vermont. We had our passports checked and our van searched. It was a simple affair. As the customs officer was checking out our credentials, I peered through the window of the border checkpoint to see the large framed photos of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney on the wall. I chuckled to myself, recalling the exact same portraits on the wall of the border crossing that I saw while leaving Tijuana, Mexico earlier this year. I thought to myself that those photos wouldn’t be there much longer.

We spent our last night of our roadtrip camping out in Barton, Vermont. Before settling down for the night, we had a meal at the Eastside Restaurant & Pub at the bottom of Lake Mephremagog in Newport. The last time we ate at Eastside was following the Jay Crossover leg of the Jay Challenge,  That was in 2005. After the 27 mile paddle from Magog, Quebec, I had to be helped out of my kayak. My legs were wobbly. We were on the lawn just outside the restaurant. I still remember the pain vividly!

We had breakfast on Tuesday morning at the Miss Lyndonville Diner in Lyndonville. This was another cool joint, but at the opposite end of the spectrum from Havana in Bar Harbor. Still, a wonderful place to eat. After breakfast, we were ready for the final leg of our journey. We made our usual final pit stop at the Putney Co-Op, then we were home two hours later. What a trip!
