Fit Werx

I haven’t written much about my 2009 racing plans yet. 2008 was a bit of an off year. I had injuries and illness in the early season that reduced my training time and limited my racing. I only competed in 27 events, though I had a strong finish. In 2007, I did 39. In 2009, I’m focused less on the quantity and more on the quality. I’ve opted to race triathlon for the first time in almost 10 years. I’ve done some kayak/bike/run triathlons in recent years, but haven’t swam much. My fresh 2009 goals include several triathlons including Ironman USA in Lake Placid. That is likely the last time I’ll write about the Ironman until it is over with. There is no reason to jinx myself.

Triathlon requires an entirely different bicycle set up and usually a different bicycle entirely. Yesterday, I visited Fit Werx in Waitsfield, Vermont for a bicycle fitting session with Ian Buchanan. Fit Werx was a really cool shop in an old house with lots of great cycling hardware. Of course, you can’t beat the location, Northern Vermont, for a visit to a bike shop. Ian came highly recommended from a former teammate, Will Kirousis. Will now runs Tri-Hard Endurance Coaching. I rang up Will last week to tell him about my goals and get some advice. He told me about Fit Werx. He said I should start there and then figure out a game plan for the bike. I plan to loop back with Will for more advice when I put  my training plan together. I also dusted off a bunch of books about triathlon training. I haven’t taken an event or series of events this seriously in years.

I’ve got some great bikes and several custom bikes, but triathlon and time trialing are different. The position required for balancing maximum power and aerodynamics is quite different. It has to be cultivated, but it starts with a great bike fit. With the help of Ian’s expertise in bio-mechanics, and a Serotta Size Cycle, we were able to dial in a good starting position. Fit Werx’s methodology makes sense to me. They use the latest technology and motion capture video to analyze your position on the bike. It felt good, after nearly 20 years of competitive bike racing, to learn something new. My form isn’t very good, so I’ve got a lot of work to do to improve. Like I said, I despite all the racing, I haven’t taken training too seriously in recent years. The change of pace is different. I’ll need to stay mentally focused. Triathlon demands that.

@trailrunningmom led another successful #Yoga at #Sunset for the #boltonlandtrust This year's venue was the #BoltonHeritageFarm It's been a tradition to move to a new spot each time. I got my first #cyclocross ride of the year in too! #yogini #yogi #shavasana Sightseeing on my second favorite road in #Connecticut #grassyhill #cycling #bicycle #sevencycles #horstengineering Camp was swell! @thecubscouts @boyscoutsofamerica #cubscouts #boyscouts #junenorcrosswebster I visited the new HQ of the @appalachianmountainclub that is under construction at 10 City Square in #Charlestown I had to ride by the #BunkerHill Monument at the end of the #FreedomTrail #Boston #sevencycles First time at the People's Forest Trail Race since 2011. This first image is the look of a dejected man who lost 25 minutes with a wrong turn on a big descent. That's costly in an 11 kilometer race. Even worse is that @trailrunningmom is the one who led him (and two other runners) off course! They survived. It was a nice day on the #FarmingtonRiver. #trailrunning #teamhorstsports #shenipsitstriders 🏃🏻⛰🏆 Another great #sunset at #windingtrails Two distant pre-swim thunderclaps turned the race into a #Duathlon which suited me just fine! It's nice to not come into T1 with a two minute deficit. #Triathlon #mountainbiking #trailrunning #teamhorstsports Once again, @trailrunningmom took the cookie prize for winning the special summit competition at the finish line of the #shenipsitstriders #SoapstoneAssault Here is a picture of a picture of myself taking a picture. @cwoodside59 put together a nice piece for the @ctforestandparkassociation quarterly. I'm looking forward to my next #carfreecommute #selfie #bicycle #windingtrails Kid's #Triathlon
