Clif Bar and the Peanut Butter Recall

The great peanut butter recall of 2009 has mostly subsided, but I haven’t seen any Peanut Butter Clif Bars for sale yet. A post on the Clif Bar homepage does indicate that new shipments to retailers will begin soon. The Livingston Family had to scrap more than $115 worth of Clif Bar products when the recall slammed Clif Bar & Company. We had just stocked up through Amazon. We purchased an early athletic season’s worth of Clif Bars and Mojo Bars. The recall page and owner’s letter explain all, but the explanation isn’t good enough for me.Β

How did a company like Clif Bar get caught up in a mess like this? Some of the stories about the now bankrupt and shuttered peanut manufacturer are downright horrifying. The factories were awful. Clif Bar’s products are almost 100% organic and they claim to hold a higher standard than any other company in the energy bar segment of the food industry. We were very disappointed.Β

At least temporarily, we have switched our allegiance to Pro Bar. They are more calories per bar, but you can split it and save some for later. They cost more too, but don’t eat it all at once. The only bright spot in this situation is that we bought the goods from Amazon. We got an automatic email when the peanut recall hit. It allowed us to sort our bars (not all were bad) and identify which lots were subject to the recall. Amazon also suspended our automatic shipments. If we had bought the bars at a brick and mortar store, we would have had less data to work with. Vive

Our quarantined Clif products are still sitting in our laundry room. We applied for a return credit, but haven’t added the bars to our compost pile just yet. We won’t do that till the check clears!
