Goodwin College River Campus Dedication

Today was the dedication ceremony for the new Goodwin College River Campus in East Hartford, Connecticut. Goodwin has already had dramatic growth and is in the early stages of a major expansion. The college has made an impressive number of investments in the East Hartford community and has plans for more. The River Campus is located near the Glastonbury line on the site of an old oil storage farm. It is wonderful to see a brownfield site turned into something much more positive. This first building is the centerpiece of a strategy to establish a leading educational institution.

I know a lot of people involved with the Goodwin story, including the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Frank Amodio, the Vice Chairman, Mary Beth Reid, and of course, the Founding President, Mark Scheinberg. Mark is one of the most talented entrepreneurs that I know. Much has been said about his vision, which is legendary, and the remarks at today’s ceremony focused on his leadership. He is a big idea guy and Goodwin is his baby. In the beginning, the school was a business, but he and his staff, with the support of the trustees, transitioned Goodwin to non-profit status, opening it up for a tremendous amount of state and federal funding. That funding has fueled the growth. Today was a happy day for East Hartford, a community that has been down on its luck for a long time. Horst Engineering moved to East Hartford during its heyday in 1950, but it seems as if it has been downhill ever since. With our 41 Cedar Street plant expansion, we have demonstrated our commitment to the town. It is nice to see that Goodwin College has demonstrated their commitment too.
