Scott Jurek’s 266.677 km (165.289 mi) American Record

I was inspired when I woke up this morning and read the results of the IAU 24 Hour World Running Championships in Brive, France. Scott Jurek ran 266.677 km (165.289 mi), an American Record, and finished second to Shingo Inoue of Japan, who ran 7 kilometers farther.

On Tuesday, I produced and moderated a YPO-WPO Tri Sports Network Global Conference Call with Jurek, Krissy Moehl, and Debbie Livingston. All three athletes took time out of their busy schedules to share stories about their ultrarunning exploits, their training, their diet, and their work/life balance. I frequently produce and moderate calls on family business and other business related topics, so it was a great experience to interview a trio of endurance athletes whom I admire. As readers of this blog know, in addition to having a passion for business, I have a passion for endurance sports.

In the buildup to the 24 hour championships, Jurek garnered quite a bit of press. Some of the news has been startling for running community followers. Last month, Runners World ran a lengthy feature story about Jurek and some of his challenges. The New York Times ran a story in Wednesday’s edition about his diet and lifestyle. Despite his amazing endurance exploits, we shouldn’t be shocked to learn that Jurek is human, just like the rest of us. Yesterday, with his most recent run, he proved that aspects of his life are almost superhuman.

Three cheers for everyone out there pushing the limits of human endurance.
