The Day After: Soapstone Mountain Trail Races

No question, putting on a race is harder than running a race. Debbie, the Shenipsit Striders, and I have always had a good appreciation for race production. After yesterday’s event, I am even more convinced that Race Directors are the unsung heroes of the sporting world. Whether it is trail running, road running, or cycling events; clubs and promoters, especially the non-profit type, make it all happen.

It might take as long for me to recover from Soapstone as it did for 7 Sisters, and I was only “helping out” at yesterday’s race. So many other folks worked hard on behalf of the competitors to make it happen. Everyone should know that when the final accounting is done, several local conservation/trails oriented non-profits, and a high school runner scholarship fund will benefit from the race proceeds.

After 26 years, the Shenipsit Striders are still trying to put on a perfect event. We took notes and welcome feedback so that 2011 can be even better than 2010.

We will post photos at

If you have the legs, come out of the Nipmuck Trail Marathon on the first Sunday in June. This will be a Shenipsit Striders event in 2011. Until then, unsung hero status goes to the very deserved, Nipmuck Dave, who will retire after this year’s race. Details to follow.
