Fortunately, during our trip to Florianopolis, Brasil, we were able to learn a bit about the culture and see a little more than just the Ironman race course. We had two larger roller bags, a bike, three backpacks, two car seats, a stroller, and two kids, so we weren’t able to see as much as we would have liked! We flew from Hartford to Atlanta to Rio de Janeiro, and then to Florianopolis. It would have been nice to explore Rio, but we went straight to the island.

Florianopolis has 400,000 residents between the mainland and the island, which is a lot more than I expected. The island was high density and bustling with activity. The place looked Mediterranean. It was aΒ cross between European and Caribbean cultures. We explored the island and saw many beautiful beaches. We also visited a fabulous farmer’s market with gorgeous produce for a fraction of the cost you would incur in Connecticut. Fishing is a big tradition in Floripa. They also harvest oysters.

We visited a fish market in the city center. Each company had a stall and the atmosphere was like at a bazaar. A price war could break out at any moment.

We stayed at Jurere Beach Village, which was on the north coast of the island. We had beautiful sunrises.

The hotel was in a great spot.

The night after the race, we went to a traditional Brasilian churrascaria. They like their meat in Brasil. We avoided the meat, but enjoyed the vegetables and the entertainment. We barely scratched the surface of Brasil. It is comical how little we saw. The country is massive, with mostly modern infrastructure, particularly on the coast. I read last week that their economy grew at a 9% race in the first quarter. That is amazing. Horst Engineering has one customer in Brasil. We supply an Embraer supplier. Embraer is a well-respected aircraft manufacturer. On the next trip, I hope to go see them. Of course, it would be great to tour Rio, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Manaus, Iguazu Falls, the Amazon, and so many other cool places. We look forward to a return visit.
