Save Energy Now LEADER Showcase

Yesterday, United Technologies Corporation (UTC) hosted a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Save Energy Now Leader Showcase at their Hamilton Sundstrand business unit in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. I represented Horst Engineering and spoke on a supplier panel along with representatives from Praxair and Whitcraft Group.

The Save Energy Now initiative is part of of the DOE’s Industrial Technology Program (ITP). LEADERS have pledged to reduce their energy intensity by 25% or more in 10 years. The UTC event was the third showcase that the DOE has facilitated. The first two were at Nissan and 3M. The LEADERS, most of which are large corporations, are working with the DOE to roll out energy saving ideas and tools to their supply chains.

Paul Vitello, the Director, Environmental Sustainability, for UTC; asked us several questions:

1) what does sustainability mean to your company, and in particular why is energy conservation important?

2) what measures have you taken to control energy use and costs (including how you identified projects, funding issues, incentives, etc.)?

3) what requirements are your customers passing on to you, and what requirements are you passing on to your suppliers

4) what recommendations do you have for the other corporations and suppliers attending the showcase?

Horst Engineering is mindful of its carbon footprint and has done a lot to reduce its greenouse gas emissions. Reducing energy consumption is good for both the bottom line and for the environment. Our company welcomes the support from both the Department of Energy, and companies like UTC. UTC has taken the bold step to develop an energy guidebook based on its experience from managing its global facilities, that will be shared with its supply chain.

Our company has taken advantage of state and federal incentives to reduce our energy consumption. We have upgraded our lighting, improved our HVAC, modernized our compressed air system, and added solar PV electric power generation. There is much progress still to be made so that we can further reduce our consumption.

Not a bad way to cap the weekend. @patriots #nepatriots #patsgame #patriots 🏈 Two days of #crawfordnotch views sandwiched with @appalachianmountainclub meeting. Cycling on Rt. 302, #trailrunning on the Crawford Path, and Mount Willard. #newhampshire 🚴🏽🏃🏻⛰ Sites and sounds from Day 2 @gpgloucester #gpgloucester The fog was burning off by the end of the Cub Juniors 9-14 year old race.

We all ran the 2-Miler. We couldn’t stay long after the finish, but we did see Kelsey Allen win overall in the 10.5 Mile main event. Hooray! #trailrunning 🏃🏻 Before and after the Western #Massachusetts Athletic Club’s Monroe (Dunbar Brook) Trail Race in the #Berkshires I rode (very wet) over from Savoy Mountain State Forest where we camped last night. On the ride along the #DeerfieldRiver I checked out #ZoarGap and then we walked down to the river to see the Tooth. Sadly, the kayakers had already passed through. The foliage turned overnight. #trailrunning #cycling 🚴🏽🏃🏻⛰ #Cyclocross racing in the morning and downhill #mountainbiking @thundermountainbikepark in the afternoon. We got in two late afternoon runs on rental bikes and are pumped to return for more fun in the future. #teamhorstsports #teamhorstjuniorsquad #thundermountainbikepark #berkshireeast 🚵‍♀️⛰ 30 kids in the 9-12 year old Race at the #mansfieldhollow #Cyclocross That’s just awesome! @the_ccap #teamhorstsports #teamhorstjuniorsquad #crossspikes #crossisboss This image was from pregame, but approaching halftime @uconnfootball there aren’t many more fans than you see here. 35 (Memphis ) to 21 (UCONN) is a lot of points in 30 minutes of #football #uconn This morning I got to hear Warren Rustand, inspirational entrepreneur and fellow @ypoglobal member, speak at a #ypo Connecticut River Valley Chapter meeting. It was fitting that the event was @riverfrontrecapture and literally ON the #connecticutriver I walked from @horsteng via my favorite train bridge. The 10 minute trip back to the plant was ample time to reflect on the #leadership lessons that he shared with our group. @garyrome and I decided that we should memorialize our time with this dedicated athlete, by requesting that he join our photo. #horstengineering #business
