2011 Northern Nipmuck Trail Race

Today’s Northern Nipmuck Trail Race kicked off the 2011 New England Grand Tree Trail Running Series. It was a gorgeous day at Bigelow Hollow State Park in Union, Connecticut. It was perfect running weather. I watched our children while Debbie ran with many of our friends on the Nipmuck Trail. This classic 16 mile race is as rugged as they get.

Ross Krause battled Brian Rusiecki for 12 miles before losing ground and the race. Rusiecki and Krause were together at the eight mile aid station turnaround, but Krause faded while Rusiecki powered on for the win in 2:05:02. Krause was three minutes back in 2:08:05. They were followed by Tim Cote in 2:12:45.

Abby Mahoney had a fine win for the women in 2:30:49. She was a minute up on Debbie Livingston at the half way mark, but pulled away to win by three minutes. Debbie was happy with her effort and improved on last year’s time, finishing in 2:33:55. She couldn’t close the gap on Abby, but was well ahead of third placed Elaine Allen, who finished in 3:03:33.

Everyone seemed to be having a great time. We spent 45 minutes at the eight mile aid station before returning to the finish to see Debbie. The trail was drier than expected. Many of the runners commented that it was overgrown after the long winter and all of that snow. The scratches on their legs confirmed this. No one was complaining about how much fun they had.
