2012 Chester 4 on the 4th Road Race

Debbie and I have run the Chester 4 on the 4th Road Race many times. It is one of the classic Connecticut races. This was the 34th edition. The race director used to always say, “10:00 A.M. at the flag pole,” in reference to the start in the village of Chester, Connecticut. That stuck in our mind.

So, when Debbie picked up her race packet at 9:00 A.M. this morning and was told that the race started at 9:00 A.M., she freaked! Oh well, that is how things go. She bolted from the elementary school back to the car, dumped her stuff, pinned her number, and ran down the hill towards the start. I hadn’t even gotten the stroller working properly yet and she was gone.

She got to the back of the pack…behind 729 other runners just as the gun was going off. Thankfully, they were a few minutes late. This was really just a fancy speed workout for her, so it didn’t really matter that she had to pick her way through a massive throng of people on the narrow roads. She made up some ground, but was still a few minutes behind her best times on the four mile course. That didn’t keep her from smiling.

It was a brutally muggy morning, but it appeared that despite the sweat, people were having tons of fun on the course. I watched the race with my daughter, my niece, and my cousin. We had a great time and so so many good friends. We saw the Bonanno’s, Barbara Pearce, Russell Hammond, the Iselin clan, and many other runner friends. I skipped the race this year. Thank goodness, otherwise, two of us would have been late! Apparently, the start was changed a few years ago to 9:00 A.M. Somehow, we got it right last year because this year, we didn’t even bother checking. We just figured it was 10:00 A.M….at the flag pole.
