Three weeks ago, we made our way west for the Tahoe Rim Endurance Runs. We were briefly in Sacramento and it was a fun stay. They had a really cool Whole Foods in Sacramento and the drive to Lake Tahoe through Donner Pass and Truckee was sweet, but the real highlight of our brief stay was the California State Railroad Museum.
I absolutely love industrial museums. Anything that shows craftsmanship and American ingenuity is tops in my book. I knew a little about how the west was built, but the museum was a real education in how the world changed with the advent of the steam engine.
Our kids had an absolute blast in this cavernous building. I was blown away by the 1,051,200 lb. Southern Pacific Railroad Locomotive No. 4294 that was built at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It rocked! What a beast!
We spent several hours at the museum, browsed some shops in Old Sacramento and then hit the road for Tahoe.
