2017 CCAP Summer Cyclocross Camp

The 2017 CT Cycling Advancement Program Cyclocross Camp was a great success. Shepard and I participated in part of the 2016 camp, but this year, he did the full program. I dropped him off on Saturday morning and then Debbie, Dahlia, and I picked him up late in the day.

Today, I took him back to the “Googins Compound” in Glastonbury, and then spent the entire day there. Debbie and Dahlia met us there for the end of the camp. Once the Juniors were settled in, I did a road ride through Glastonbury, Hebron, and Bolton. I was joined by Team Horst Sports mate, Tom Ricardi and Doug Toback, whose son came from Long Island to participate in the camp.

It was a gorgeous day and we had a blast. Afterwards, Tom and I participated in cross drills and skills while tooling around the mini-course that was set up for the program.

The camp was made of Juniors (25 of them) and adults (15 of them). Some parts of the program, like today’s practice race, combined the groups. The kids went for 35 minutes and the adults did 45 minutes. The course was technical and dusty with a mix of grass and trails. There were sharp turns, steep uphills, steep downhills, off-camber sections, a set of barriers, a steep run-up, and a sand pit. It was representative of a typical New England cross course.

Shawn Googins and his family were the gracious hosts of this event. Their property was a great venue. CCAP pulled together some great sponsors, including Cannondale, Cycling Concepts, City Steam Brewery, and Victus Coffee. Horst Engineering donated a set of Horst Spikes/Cross Spikes to each of the Junior campers. Last night, Shawn put on a BBQ to celebrate.

The talented coaching staff included Cassie Maximenko, Todd Bowden, Aidan Charles, Dave Hoyle, Hunter Pronovost, and “Thunder.” The Team Horst Junior SquadΒ was well represented. In addition to Shepard, we had five other kids participate. They learned some valuable skills over the course of two action packed days. All of our team parents reported that their boys “slept like babies” on Saturday night and the same is expected for Sunday.
